JANE GOODALL
This is one of Jane Goodall's books "Through a
Window: My Thirty Years with the Chimpanzees of Gombe" that Theresa brought to the
Wilderness Travel's "Perspectives on East Africa" symposium at Tanzania in
March, 1999.
- Jane Goodall is a renowned British animal behaviorist best
known for her long-term research on chimpanzees in the wild. She has spent more than 35
years in face-to-face observation of man's closest relative, and her work has led to an
appreciation of individual differences among nonhuman primates and the discovery of
tool-use and cannibalism among chimpanzees. Goodall's work with Gombe's Kasakela and
Mitumba chimp communities--through three chimp generations--ranks as the longest field
study of animals in the wild. She is associated with both the Gombe Stream Research Center
in Tanzania and Stanford University. Books she has written include Through a Window: My
Thirty Years with the Chimpanzees of Gombe, and the classic Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns
of Behavior. [Wilderness Travel's Symposium Information]
In the afternoon of the "Perspectives on East
Africa" symposium Jane presented her slide show. Remember the question I posed at the
beginning of the home page? No, I did not cry at top of Mt. Kilimanjaro when I climbed to
the top. No, I did not cry when a large, sharp wood splinter was being removed from my
bleeding hand. At the end of her talk, tears were streaming down my face. I was in good
company; there was not a dry eye in the whole room of about 100 people. She gave an
emotional speech on the plight of chimpanzees in particular and the plight of African
wildlife and people in general.

Despite being sick, Jane gave another inspiring talk
in the evening and also graciously signed Theresa's book: "For Theresa: Together
we can make this a better world for all."
Here is Jane Goodall's
lucky charm that she brings everywhere. He has traveled to countless countries and been
touched by hundreds of thousands of people.
Theresa and I certainly did not pass the chance of
touching this little guy. You know the TV show "Touched by an Angle." Theresa
and I felt that our hearts were deeply touched by Jane.
