12/09/1999 Match #3 (1/16) against the Arizona Wildcats
Don't get Stanford Women Mad...
Logan Tom: Volleyball Warrior Princess
Stanford women volley
team was entering its Sweet 16. Here was a photo project that I did for our miniature
schnauzer. Rondo: Sweet 16! However, I think the Stanford women would not play like a
sleepy puppy, or would they?
Warming up. As it turned out
that Stanford needed a lot warming up! During the first game they were playing rather
pathetically. They were behind 1-11 before they finally woke up!
Coach Shaw was pumping up the team.
The Stanford starters Tom, Conrad, Walsh, Yamasaki, Gregory, and Kagawa
were introduced.

Yamasaki and Tom were warming up.
Were Tom and Yamasaki trying to persuade the setter Kagawa which person
she should be setting more to? :-)
Let the game begin!
Coach Shaw trying to calm the team down after trailing in the first game.
Tom serving.
Look at the intensity in Walsh and Yamasaki's eyes as they were getting
ready to receive the ball.
Stanford was behind in the first game. It was too difficult to catch
up and thus lost the game 6-15. The Arizona Wildcats were all smile in this picture.
Well, don't you get the Stanford women volleyball players mad. Because, if you do, then
they are going to come roaring back and get you!
A nice serve by #11 Yamasaki.
Stanford scored another kill.
Stanford stormed back and beat the opponent the next two games 15-6 and 15-7, with
significant contributions by Logan Tom. Logan scored 18 kills during the evening.

Stanford's #15: Logan
Tom. Freshman. From Salt Lake City. 6-1. Outside Hitter
One of the most sought after recruits in collegiate women's volleyball history ... Will
make an immediate impact at outside hitter ... Named the 1998 Gatorade Circle of Champions
National High School Volleyball Player of the Year, making her the third member of the '99
Cardinal squad to win that honor (Kerri Walsh - 1995; Sara Sandrik -1997) ... Only high
school player to compete for U.S. National Team at the World Championship Qualifier in
January of this year ... Will compete for U.S. Junior National Team, along with fellow
Stanford freshman Ashley Ivy, at the Junior World Championships in Canada from August 23-
September 5.
She even made it to the cover of Sports Illustrated for Women.
Okay, okay. As much as I like the Golden Bears since I graduated from there with both
my B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in '82 and '83, I must
admit that Logan Tom is the player to watch for the next three years in NCAA.

A huge defensive stand by
Stanford. Looked at the double block and all the players in their proper defensive
position. Stanford demonstrated that teamwork, communication, and positioning are a large
part of winning.
Gregory and Conrad listening to coach Shaw's instructions.
Celebration after the game and match point.
The Arizona Wildcats wiped
off their sweat and tears and left the court with their heads down after losing the fourth
game 7-15 and also the match.

Here was the official story from the Stanford WEB
