Come with us for a three-day weekend vacation in San Diego in October of 1997. This is
our second trip to San Diego after about 12 years. We should have been back sooner but you
know how things go. After a short flight from Oakland with Southwest Airline, we arrived
at San Diego. After checking in, we walked around the hotel to find a place for a lunch.
We were fortunate to find this very nice Karl
Strauss Brewery & Grill on Columbia Street.
Look at the delicious pig
being roasted for Octoberfest. It's too bad we did not get to eat any since that pig was
for dinner. By the way, click on the thumbnail image for a larger view. We then
walked around the downtown and found Horton Plaza.
There are a lot of interesting shops, but we did not
get a chance to shop since we were short on time. We did get a chance to get a cup of
Latte at Boudin Sourdough Bakery & Cafe. (I know, I know, Boudin is really a San
Francisco thing) The main purpose of the trip was to visit Theresa's aunt Katherine. Out
of all the nice restaurants in San Diego we picked Marie
Callender. Oh well. Of course, Theresa and I always like their pies. Besides, we had a
very nice visit with her family.
We stayed at Wyndham Emerald Plaza
Hotel
. It's located at 400 West Broadway
between State and Columbia Street. (619-239-4500) The hotel has one of those indoor
atriums, which I'm a sucker for. In fact, Theresa and I took the outdoor elevator several
times all the way to the top so we can enjoy the nice view from out there.
The bar was pretty nice and lively in the evening. We enjoyed listening to
some jazz. The best of all is that they have one of those Yamaha
Disklavier. I definitely need to get
one of these toys.
Look, Ma, I'm playing piano. Well, not
quite. The piano is playing from a CD-ROM.
